Slovenian banking group NLB is considering entry into the Albanian market, as part of its broader strategy to strengthen its regional presence in Southeast Europe, NLB Group CEO Blaz Brodnjak told Albanian business outlet Monitor.

"We are closely monitoring and continuously assessing developments across the Southeastern European region, not just in Albania. We remain open to analyzing and pursuing value-adding opportunities that can support our growth, including potential M&A activity. Our focus extends beyond the banking sector," Brodnjak told Monitor on Friday.

NLB has closely monitored Albania's progress in aligning with EU standards, Brodnjak said, noting a reduction in risk and increased confidence among foreign investors. The bank expects Montenegro and Albania to be the first countries in the region to join the European Union, acting as catalysts for broader regional development.

NLB is particularly focused on supporting projects that reduce energy consumption, expand green energy production, improve electrical grids, enhance energy efficiency, and develop public transport, railways, and highways, according to the CEO.

Why it matters:
A potential NLB entry would signal renewed interest by regional financial institutions in Albania's banking sector at a time when cross-border banking expansion in Southeast Europe has been subdued. For investors and policymakers, such a move could have implications for competition, corporate lending availability, and longer-term consolidation dynamics in the Albanian financial system.
